I have been talking about all kinds of ways to get healthy, but there is one way that is often overlooked, or maybe just unspoken. Many of us associate getting healthy with things that aren't fun or are a lot of work. I mean, let's face it. You have to be a psycho to enjoy exercising, going to the gym, or broccoli. But what about health tips that not only have benefits, but are also enjoyable? I've noticed a lot of people are trying to maintain a more healthy lifestyle lately, but something no one ever talks about is how sex can improve your health. I am going to list for you, 7 of the countless health benefits of having sex on a regular basis.
I think this is a fave for most people. Sex really is like an intense cardio-vascular work out. Not only do you burn 140 calories or more in 30 minutes, but you also target all of your major muscle groups. This enhances your muscular tone, strength and endurance, flexibility, and balance. As a result you boost your heart health and drastically decrease your risk for heart disease and stroke. Sex lowers diastolic blood pressure (the smaller number in your blood pressure reading).
Having sex twice a week can increase your immunity. Regular sex is linked to high levels of the antibody called immunoglobulin A which can protect you from the common cold or other types of infections like the flu. Crazy, right?! I also read that sex can protect you against prostate and other forms of cancer. I'm not sure how true that one is though, Google it. Sex helps ease sinus and nasal congestion and even headaches.
Your favorite singer gets it in in her dressing room before every stage performance. Why? Sex releases the neurotransmitters adrenaline, dopamine, seratonin, and oxytocin which activate the pleasure centers in the brain (nucleus accumbens). This activation opens up neural pathways that make stress a little easier to handle and create lasting feelings of intimacy and relaxation which completely counteract anxiety and depression.
The same hormones that help alleviate stress can put you in such a state of relaxation that makes it easy to fall asleep. I mean, I guess that sounds like "duh", but the scientific reason for that is because of the hormones prolactin and oxytocin. Getting adequate sleep of course relates back to your immunity and stress levels....hmm...
Ladies, idk if this is you, but I heard that as you age and have children, it becomes a lil easier to have "accidents". Like you laugh a little too hard, or you sneeze or something and kind of, you know, piss a little. Well, sex (and Kegels) can help you strengthen your pelvic floor muscles.
When I was younger, my peers used to say stuff like "sex cures acne", but I never believed it. Maybe there was some truth to it after all. Apparently, regular sex promotes the release of estrogen which aids in having moisturized, soft skin and shinier hair. It seems that sex can even combat the effects of aging, making you look anywhere from 7-12 years younger on average.
Uterine contractions like the ones experienced during sexual intercourse can help alleviate cramps when it is that time of the month. There is also evidence that sex can decrease the risk of endometriosis, a condition where uterine tissue grows outside the uterus.
I'm of course not here to tell you when, where or with whom to have sex. I don't care about your orientation or marital status: single, married, or side chick. Sex is good for many reasons. It helps us to feel loved or close to someone. I just have to say to make sure that you are having sex for only the right reasons, and make sure to keep yourself protected from STDs and KIDs if you don't want 'em.
